NEWS: Virgin Voyages’ first ship, Scarlet Lady, will arrive in Miami in 2020 for her inaugural
season, where she will sail to the Caribbean hosting more than 2,700 passengers ages 18+. She’ll feature unique spaces including a tattoo studio.
The name Scarlet Lady appeared on one of the earliest planes to fly for Virgin Atlantic. Now, as the flagship for the Virgin Voyages fleet, the Scarlet Lady name will be paired with the brand’s iconic mermaid image. She reflects a powerful spirit guide and will adorn the hull of the ship.
Virgin released renderings of exterior and interior spaces inspired by the brand’s design concept – the Modern Romance of Sailing. Building on the company’s mission to redefine what those expect from a sea vacation Virgin has carefully curated a Creative Collective featuring some of the world’s leading interior design firms, none of whom have ever designed for the cruise industry before.
Classic nautical elements such as steel, brass and portholes are tastefully sprinkled throughout the ship so that Virgin Voyages passengers (called sailors) are always conscious that they are at sea.
Beginning with the ship’s top deck, Richard’s Rooftop designed by Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio will be an exclusive chic outdoor lounge reserved for the ship’s suite guests. Richard’s Rooftop is a private club that features a futuristic aesthetic with circular loungers, giant umbrellas and accents of dichroic glass that will cast shadows of rainbow reflections across the outdoor lounge.
Heading inside the ship, Tom Dixon’s famed void lighting will adorn the entryway to Pink Agave, the ship’s upscale modern Mexican restaurant designed by Design Research Studio. Electric blue metallic lighting fixtures will cascade from the ceilings above oversized banquets that line the dining room’s portholes. An elongated curved lounger centres the room with round tables for two offering an intimate dining experience. The upscale restaurant will feature a bar area in the foyer and a private dining room for larger groups.
The Manor is a signature nightclub Inspired by Richard Branson’s history in the music industry and his first ever Virgin music studio of the same name, the dance music fuelled space has been expertly outfitted with details, platforms and corners that make it both somewhere to see and to be seen. With emerald, aubergine undertones and gold accents The Manor will bring glitz and glamour to sea.
The Dock is an outdoor lounge with a focus on relaxation, socializing and an appreciation of the gorgeous views the ship provides. Located on the very aft of the ship on deck 7, The Dock is reminiscent of the chicest seaside lounges in the Hamptons, Ibiza, Bali and beyond.
Back atop of the ship, relaxation and adult-play will meet yachting glamour at The Athletic Club, an outdoor lounge that celebrates traditional nautical elements designed by Concrete Amsterdam. Featuring the largest day bed at sea, the white and red striped semi- circular lounger is the perfect spot on board for sunbathing or star gazing. Adjacent to the daybed is a 220-square-foot area of triple netting where sailors can lay out and overlook the open space and decks below, as if they were sailing on a catamaran. The Athletic Club expands across both sides of the aft of the ship with 10 cabanas overlooking the ocean with beverage service from the adjacent bar.
The ship will feature more than 20 food venues when it launches in 2020. Not one will cost extra, and all will be open until late.
“We want our eateries to delight and ignite serendipitous experiences for our sailors, so we have set out on a mission to capture the spirit of dining in the best cities of the world and bring it to sea,” said Tom McAlpin, president and CEO. “Because food is the fuel for our bodies and souls, and we’re Virgin Voyages, naturally it all had to be included within your ticket price.”
As previously announced, Scarlet Lady will have no main dining room, no set dining times, no dress code and no buffet.
“There’s a Virgin twist on everything you’ll see aboard the Scarlet Lady, which means there will be no stuffy formalities, boring buffets and no main dining rooms” added Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group. “Sailors are not going to want to leave our ship after they experience how we’ve designed our restaurants and tasted the dishes we are going to be serving up in 2020.”
The Test Kitchen restaurant is designed with an inviting entryway with lighting fixture images that mimic the periodic table. The Test Kitchen’s laboratory-like environment is accented by metallic furniture, sleek clean lines and of course the finishing touches of beakers, test tubes and volumetric flasks.
The B-Complex features the ultimate well-being and fitness experience with strength, spin, yoga and cardio in its Build, Burn, Bike and Balance rooms, all with dramatic ocean views. For on-demand fitness, the Burn and Build gyms will each be equipped with Technogym ARTIS, a line of sustainably crafted cutting-edge fitness technology.
After working up a sweat or finding their moment of reflection, sailors will restore themselves in the serenity zone by hopping in the Well-being Pool and boosting their performance with fresh cold-pressed juices, served at the Gym and Tonic bar.
On deck 5, well-being will take centre stage at Redemption, the ship’s spa. Inspired by an underwater cave, Redemption will serve as a mermaid and merman hideaway complete with hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room, cold plunge pools, quartz beds, and rejuvenating spa treatments. By night, sailors can complete their well-being journey by attending one of the voyage’s evening spa parties where a killer DJ will transform the spa’s thermal suite into a mermaid hideaway extravaganza.
Vitamin Sea is also about being pampered and well-groomed. The Scarlet Lady will offer an array of personal treatments in different spaces across the ship to transform sailors. This includes a standalone blow dry bar called the Dry Dock salon, the Stubble & Groom barbershop with a male pedicure spa overlooking a porthole ocean view and to polish it off the gorgeous mani-pedi spa.
Scarlet Lady, will also bring stylish tattoo artistry to the high seas with Squid Ink. To create this one-of-a-kind experience on board, Virgin Voyages has teamed up with the ink industry legends from World Famous Tattoo Ink. Squid Ink will also offer body piercings as well as permanent makeup treatments using vegan-friendly Perma Blend pigments.
